Movie Summary of I Am Love by Michael The Moviegoer.
I AM LOVE = **1/2
“You Are What You Eat”
Luca Guadagnino’s Italian saga “I Am Love” looks delicious on the plate, tastes like comfort food going down, but finally leaves an aftertaste of high fructose corn syrup.
Tilda Swinton succeeds in tackling a role for which she must speak in Italian with a Russian accent. As wife and mother to a wealthy family living in Milan, Italy, Swinton is the centerpiece of this drama. After winning an Oscar for her performance in 2007’s “Michael Clayton” Swinton proves her skills as an actress are just as strong in any language.
Things get spiced up when she meets her son’s friend, a very sexy gourmet chef. They begin an illicit affair that can only have tragic consequences. Unfortunately, the movie’s handling of those consequences is laughable and preposterous. John Adams’ majestic, yet sometimes overbearing score, just highlights the silliness.
Guadagnino’s camera is in love with scenery. There are far too many establishing shots and montages of European architecture, fields of wildflowers, and bugs. But after the ridiculous ending, you might recall those moments as the best parts.
DVD Double Feature: In 2001, Tilda Swinton starred in a little-known gem of a thriller called “The Deep End”. Swinton plays an overprotective mother who learns her son might be guilty of murder. She then takes it upon herself to try and cover-up his alleged crime. This tale of suspense is full of stunning Hitchcockian twists.
