“A Bromantic Comedy”
Upon becoming engaged, Paul Rudd discovers he has no male friends in his life. So who will be his best man? That’s the premise for this new bromantic comedy “I Love You, Man.” Enter Jason Segel (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) and let the male-bonding begin.
Rudd, who was so wonderful in last year’s “Role Models”, here reminds me of the Jack Lemmon half in this odd couple. He’s a real estate agent who is trying to sell Lou Ferrigno’s house in the hills. He relates more to women until Segel gives him life-lessons in how to be a man.
Naturally, Rudd’s character changes to the point where his fiance questions whether having a male best friend was ever a good idea to begin with.
This is a pretty formulaic movie treading a lot of familiar territory without any earth-shattering plot twists. But along the way there are enough big laughs to keep us happy.
DVD Watch: The premise of “I Love You, Man” is dangerously close to plagiarizing Patrice Leconte’s 2006 french comedy “My Best Friend”. Here a female friend accuses a man of having no real male friends, and challenges him to produce one.
