Movie Summary of The Girl Who Played With Fire by Michael The Moviegoer.
THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE = **1/2
“Burned Out”
It’s been only a few months since the hot Swedish import “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” opened in theatres here, and now the much-anticipated sequel arrives. A murder mystery involving a punky computer hacker and an investigative journalist, “The Girl Who Played With Fire” wisely stays with the same leads as the original film. Noomi Rapace still plays Lisbeth, and that’s a good thing. Why, then, did anyone feel the need to switch directors?
Here, Daniel Alfredson replaces ‘Dragon Tattoo’ director Niels Arden Oplev and that’s not such a good thing. Oplev’s original film of the Stieg Larsson international bestseller was wonderfully cinematic. Alfredson’s sequel looks more like it was made for television. (A Hollywood version of the first film is currently underway with director David Fincher, and that’s probably a good thing!)
‘Fire’ opens with a reprise of the most disturbing and exploitative scene from the first film. Lisbeth is brutally raped by her sadistic pig of a legal guardian. That scene in the first film seemed oddly disconnected from the rest of the story. But in the sequel it is an integral part of the new plot which allows us to discover more about Lisbeth’s family background. If this film had the same director as the first, there’d be a feeling of a more seamless flow between the two films.
But ‘Fire’ unfortunately feels like it’s on franchise auto-pilot. It’s happy to be the next off the assembly line because it doesn’t need to worry about being anything fresh and original.
DVD Double Feature: See the first film, “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”, the Swedish version, before the American version arrives.
