THE MERRY GENTLEMAN = ***
“There’s Something About Merry”
Michael Keaton makes an impressive artistic leap with his directorial debut “The Merry Gentleman”. The last thing I was expecting was to compare Keaton’s directing style to that of another actor-turned-director, Clint Eastwood.
Like Eastwood’s films, Keaton’s story unfolds at a slow, leisurely pace. Keaton plays a hit man who befriends a lonely young woman, beautifully played by Kelly Macdonald, who may or may not have been a witness to one of Keaton’s hits.
The story is set during a Christmas in Chicago. The cinematography is winter gray and among the expertly composed shots are haunting visual portraits of urban loneliness.
“The Merry Gentlemen” is a dark, edgy, moody piece of slow jazz. Macdonald’s performance is the film’s soft center. She lights up and shines like a Christmas tree everytime she’s on screen. She is just plain irresistible.
DVD Watch: William H. Macy plays a hit man who develops a guilty conscience and goes into therapy in the excellent psychological drama “Panic”. The film co-stars Donald Sutherland, Neve Campbell, Tracey Ullman and John Ritter.
