THE MYSTERIES OF PITTSBURGH = **

“Unsolved Mystery”

Michael Chabon’s 1988 novel is given a lackluster screen treatment despite some obvious good intentions. It’s a “how I came of age during my summer vacation” drama about a teenager named Art (admirably played by Jon Foster). The story interweaves his relationships with his mobster father (Nick Nolte), his sex-addicted boss (Mena Suvari), his love for a blond hottie (Sienna Miller), and his homosexual feelings for her boyfriend (Peter Sarsgaard).

That description should make many people curious to see this movie. But the real mystery is how to keep yourself awake while watching it. The film moves at a snail’s pace, with dull and uninspired cinematography leaving us nothing much to even look at.

“The Mysteries Of Pittsburgh” wants to be “The Graduate” for a new generation. But we already had a much better version of that with 2004’s “Garden State” (which coincidentally also co-starred Peter Sarsgaard).

DVD Watch: Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon’s work is not easy to adapt for the screen. But a much better attempt was made with 2000’s “Wonder Boys” starring Michael Douglas and Tobey Maguire.
